I've commented before that the war here in Iraq isn't so much a war of people as it is a war of ideas and perceptions and I've ranted at length why its better to fight that type of war here than in Afghanistan.

Which makes it so frustrating, when elected officials say things like this. Now I know what he's trying to say, and I even know what he's trying to do even though I do agree with it. What he's saying is that if the Government of Iraq can't handle its own security, well, thats just too bad, but don't look to us to prop you up.

Aside from that being the wrong message to send (hey you are an ally and all, but you know what? Screw you) the way he's sending is also wrong. Our current perception fight here on the ground, as we've pulled out of the cities and turtled up on our FOBs is the terrorists claim that they drove us to our bases. They made us flee in terror and hide behind the high T-walls of our fortifications, where we sit cowering waiting for our air planes and helicopters to fly us to safety.

The truth is far from that, but that is what we have to fight on the streets, and to hear an elected official imply that violence will make us withdraw fully, only re-enforces that and invigorates the opposition.
